Direct Payments Courses for Direct Employers and Personal Assistants
Introduction to Direct Payments training for Direct Employers(Direct Payment recipients)
(fully funded/free to attend)
This FULLY FUNDED series of training sessions have been developed by people who receive direct payments and longstanding recipients of direct payments. The programme is also available to anyone who funds their own care as a Self-funder who also wants to know more about their rights and responsibilities as an employer.
Whether or not you employ a Personal Assistant, these sessions will help you to understand how to manage your direct payment effectively and will give you clear guidance about your rights and responsibilities in this regard.
The importance of good communication, good employment practice and the legal implications of your role will be included throughout the programme.
Here is an outline about what you can expect from the full programme.
Day 1: Recruitment
· Writing job descriptions & person specifications: Preparing job adverts: Advertising: Shortlisting: Interviewing: Making a job offer
Day: 2 Contracts
· Pay;Pension;Redundancy;insurance;What the Support Agencies Offer;Role of Birmingham City Council Finance Team
Day 3: Induction
Supervision; Learning & Development; Health & Safety; Risk Assessments; Managing Working Relationships; Sources of Support Available
Tuesday 4th, 11th and 18th Sept - YMCA, Erdington
Thursday 1st, 8th and 15th November- Hub Hazelwell, Stirchley
Introduction to the role of a Personal Assistant
(fully funded/free to attend)
If you are newly employed in the role of Personal Assistant or even if you have been doing this work for a long time, this 1 day course will enable you to be more informed about the following:
- Ø To understand the vital role you play as a personal assistant(PA)
- Ø To appreciate your responsibilities as a PA
- Ø To understand what person centred care means in your role
- Ø To know your rights as an employee
- Ø To understand your responsibilities as an employee
The course will be delivered by the following support agencies: Compass Disability Services, Penderels Trust and Ideal for All. They will also be available to offer you advice and guidance.
Please note: This session is an opportunity for Personal Assistants to network and share their experiences. In order to create an environment where they feel comfortable to do this we would like to ask their employers not to attend.

Dementia Awareness – 25th July 2018 10.00am-1.00pm

First Aid Awareness - 19th September – 10am until 1.00pm

Would you/your personal assistant know that to do if you had a fall? Are you confident in your resuscitation technique and the correct use of the recovery position? Would you know what to do if someone was choking? This session will give practical tips on how to help until the emergency services arrive.
